Starting a game
Open Gran Avenida, type your name and pick one of the tokens. Then there are three ways to play:
- Play online: puts you in a public game with other people. It starts after a countdown and, if there are fewer than four of you, bots fill the empty seats.
- Create private game: opens a room with a 5-letter code so you can play with just your friends.
- Practice against bots: you play alone against 1 to 5 AI opponents, offline.
Playing with friends, step by step
- Create the room. Open Gran Avenida, type your name, pick a token and tap “Create private game”.
- Invite your friends. Tap “Invite friends” and send them the link, or tell them the 5-letter code so they can type it in “Join with a code”.
- Set up the game. If you like, tap “Change rules” to choose the starting cash, the length or the variants, and tap an empty seat to add bots.
- Start playing. When everyone has tapped “I'm ready”, the host taps “Start game”.
Each player uses their own device. There's nothing to install: just open the link. More ideas in how to play with friends.
Your turn
Everyone starts on Start with 1,500 aurei. On your turn:
- Before rolling, you can build, sell, mortgage and propose trades.
- Press and hold the “Roll” button to throw the two dice, and move forward by the total.
- The space you land on takes effect: you buy it, pay the rent or a tax with the “Pay” button, or tap the deck to take a card…
- If you roll doubles, you roll again. Three doubles in a row send you straight to Jail.
- When you're done, tap “End turn”.
Every time you pass or land on Start, you collect your salary of 200 aurei.
Buying, auctions and rent
If you land on a street, station or utility that nobody owns, you can buy it for the price on its deed. If you don't buy it, it goes up for auction among all the players, you included, and the highest bidder wins it.
If you land on another player's property, press “Pay” to give them the rent (and they do the same when they land on yours):
- Streets: base rent, double if you own the whole district, and much more with houses or a hotel.
- Stations: 25, 50, 100 or 200 aurei, depending on how many you own.
- Utilities: 4 times the dice roll, or 10 times if you own both.
A mortgaged property collects no rent. You keep collecting rent even while you're in Jail.
Districts, houses and hotels
The board has 22 streets split into 8 color districts: Old Quarter, Harbor, Bohemia, Market, Theaters, Boulevard, Gardens and Crown. To build, you need every street in a district, and none of them can be mortgaged.
- You build evenly: one house on each street in the district before adding the next one.
- Once every street has four houses, the fifth upgrade is a hotel.
- The bank only has 32 houses and 12 hotels: when they run out, nobody else can build.
- You can sell buildings back to the bank at any time for half of what they cost.
During the game, the “My properties” button shows all your streets from above and lets you build from each street's card.
Jail
You go to Jail by landing on “Off to Jail!”, because of a card, or by rolling three doubles in a row. You don't collect your Start salary on the way. To get out, you can:
- Pay a fine of 50 aurei.
- Use a freedom card, if you have one.
- Try to roll doubles. You get three attempts; if the third one fails, you pay the fine and get out.
If you simply land on the Jail space, you're only visiting and nothing happens.
Cards, taxes and Free Plaza
On the Fortune and Community spaces you draw a card: it can move you forward, pay you, charge you for repairs to your buildings, send you to Jail or give you a freedom card that you can keep or trade.
There are two tax spaces. With the tax jackpot on Free Plaza variant, which is on by default, taxes and fines build up in a jackpot that goes to whoever lands on Free Plaza.
Mortgages, debts and trades
You can mortgage a property when there are no buildings in its district: the bank pays you half its price. To get it back, you pay that amount plus 10%.
If you owe more than you have, you go into debt: sell buildings, mortgage or trade until you can pay. If you still can't, you go bankrupt and leave the game.
With “Trade” you offer another player a swap of properties, money and freedom cards. A trade must always include at least one property or card, and you can't trade streets from a district that has buildings.
How to win
The last player who isn't bankrupt wins. If the room has a round limit, when it's reached the player with the highest net worth wins: their cash plus the value of their properties and buildings.
Room options
In a private room, the host taps “Change rules” to choose:
- Starting cash: 1,000, 1,500, 2,000 or 2,500 aurei.
- Length: no limit, or 15, 25 or 40 rounds.
- Time per move: no clock, 45 seconds, 90 seconds or 3 minutes.
- Bot pace: relaxed, normal or fast.
- Variants: auction properties nobody buys, tax jackpot on Free Plaza, and double salary for landing exactly on Start.
The quick online match always uses the classic rules.
Tips to win
- Complete districts as soon as you can. A single street earns little; a district with houses changes the game.
- Aim for the third house. It's the biggest jump in rent: build up to three houses as soon as you can afford it.
- Keep an eye on the Market district. Its streets sit 6 to 9 spaces after Jail, so players land on them a lot.
- Keep some cash. Running down to zero forces you to mortgage or sell at the worst possible moment.
- Trade. Offering a street you don't need for the one you're missing is usually better than waiting to land on it.
- Hoard houses. If you build lots of houses instead of hotels, the bank runs out and your rivals can't build.
